Personality:

Known for his melancholic, dull eyes, being one of the top ranked Espada, Ulquiorra’s number and looks are easily set to deceive, not only because rank-wise his strength surpasses by far most of his higher ranked companions, but in the Japanese language, the number four (or “Cuarta” Espada as he’s known during the anime – from the Spanish numerals.) is pronounced similarly to the word “death”.

Needlessly said, Ulquiorra is by far one of the most dangerous, downright lethal Espadas, being often unpredictable. Whereas, he’s not without a conscience; in spite of Ulquiorra’s almost blind obedience towards his master: Sozuke Aizen who created the Arrancar, and the fact he’ll mindlessly crush anyone, including his own companions, who happens to stand between himself and the completion of a mission, the Espada will abstain from interacting with anyone which does not meet his interest, regarding to those as “trash”, gaining an almost aloof, absent quality to his actions.

Physically, Ulquiorra’s main characteristic is the half broken hollow mask shielding his face’s right side, a sign of the Hollow-Arrancar transformation process, plus the hole in his chest are obvious marks of Ulquiorra’s inhumanity; there also green tears running down from his eyes, whose appliance or meaning is currently unknown (besides being important for the character’s design). Usually, when not engaged in a particularly difficult battle, Ulquiorra appears with his hands stuffed in the pockets of his white Espada vest, in an almost bored stance, deflecting enemy attacks with his bare hands as a proof of being the possessor of immense power.

During the canon episodes, this power has yet to be revealed, whereas Ulquiorra has fought using his Zanpakutou (sword holding spiritual power used by Shinigami, Vizard and Arrancar.) before; it was never on its released form. Another remarkable ability demonstrated by this Espada, is that he can use his left eye to record information, posterior removing it from its sockets and smashing them to create a “hologram” of sorts to replay what he experienced.

Background:

Upon escaping from the Shinigami realm, known as “Soul Society” and arriving to “Hueco Mundo” the world inhabited solely by Hollows, the former captain Sozuke Aizen brought alongside the Hougyoku, an artifact constructed to allow Hollows to obtain human forms (according to the canon, the more powerful they are, the most similar to humans the Arrancar can get) and gain the ability to hold a Zanpakutou, which appears as part of themselves, unlike Shinigami, they can’t have shikkai nor bankai releases, but something named “Ressurección” (resurrection in English) that concedes them their hollow form while keeping their strength as Arrancar. It through the usage of this object that Aizen created most of his Arrancar army (since it is possible for an Arrancar to appear naturally without being artificially created), renaming the ten strongest, most talented ones as “Espada”. Among then was Ulquiorra.

His first appearance occurs on Earth alongside the Arrancar named “Yammy” the 10th Espada, on a mission whose goal was to collect information about Kurosaki Ichigo, despite the battle which ensued afterward between his comrade and the target, Ulquiorra keeps cool, deeming them all unworthy of his time and returning with the requested information; on the missions aftermath it is discovered he doesn’t get along with another, weaker Espada, the rushed, impulsive 6th – Grimmjow Jeagerjaques – Who accuses him of not having killed Ichigo and completed the mission. Ulquiorra shrugs it off and afterwards comes back to the human world, to capture Orihime, a task which he easily finishes, by bringing the girl willingly on his side after using psychology to make her perceive how her friends would die if she didn’t agree with it – demonstrating not only physical strength but a sharp, cunning mind.

During his time “taking care” of the young female, Ulquiorra remains passive, avoiding conflict while keeping himself busy with relatively trivial happenings, such as making sure Orihime was kept healthy and didn’t try to escape her prison-like room within the “Last Noches” palace, while also being seemingly scornful towards the girl, telling her about how her friends had intruded the complex but couldn’t possibly survive long enough to rescue her. As it happens, Ichigo does end up crossing Ulquiorra while searching for another of the “rescue-team” members (who happened to be Kuchiki Rukia) and the two battle; at first, Ulquiorra overpowers his shinigami counterpart, dodging the attacks without even removing his hands from his pockets, but when Ichigo calls forth his bankai, a more serious battle begins, with Ulquiorra noting that the other’s power had raised to almost an Espada level, it is then that Ulquiorra first reveals his full name: Ulquiorra Schiffer and his ranking, mocking Ichigo for his inability to win even against the 4th Espada as he thrusts his sword into Ichigo’s chest, leaving his opponent to die.

Due to his blind obedience towards Aizen, Ulquiorra ends up in yet another battle with Grimmjow, who had been using Orihime’s healing powers for his own purposes and his captured inside a “Caja Negación” (Which can be translated as more or less “Negation Box” in English) during the duration of it, an ability used by high ranked Arrancar to punish their inferiors by sealing them inside a parallel, inescapable universe; however, since Ulquiorra is by far, stronger than Grimmjow, he ends up managing to escape this prison after two or three hours and returning to Aizen’s side, who leaves “Las Noches” under his care while most other Arrancar start their attack on the human world, demonstrating how much Aizen trusts Ulquiorra do nothing but his bidding.
